CONTRACTORS have completed a 2.4 million refurbishment of one of the East End of London’s towering icons—in the heart of Petticoat Lane street market.
The finishing touches were added this week at the ‘gateway to Aldgate’ Middlesex Street Estate in the contract for the City of London Corporation.
The work by the United House social housing and development group included the 23-storey Petticoat Tower (pictured) where aluminium-clad triple glazed timber windows and doors were put in along with a total electrical wiring makeover.
Refurbishment of 99 kitchens and 95 bathrooms began in July and has been completed on time and on budget, the City Corporation said this week.
The estate includes 120 low-rise dwellings and the 80 apartments in the tower block which dominates the skyline over two neighbourhoods in Aldgate and Whitechapel, rivalling the nearby iconic ‘Gherkin’ office block.
