A plastic bottle ‘return deposit’ scheme on drinks has been started at Canary Wharf to stop single-use plastic waste.

A special vending machine, the first of its type in Britain, has been installed at an organic juice bar and coffee shop in Canada Place giving discounts during Recycle Week up till Sunday.

It is part of Canary Wharf Group’s ‘breaking the plastic habit’ campaign started in June.

Canary Wharf’s Steve Greig said: “We hope this is a blueprint for businesses and communities all over the country to make environment changes.”

Bottles collected by the machine are being sent to packaging manufacturers using recycled plastics for products supplied back to Canary Wharf food retailers in a ‘circular economy’.

Canary Wharf Group had a ‘plastics’ audit in June, aimed at eventually becoming the world’s first ‘plastic free’ commercial centre, working with Surfers Against Sewage environmental campaigners to reduce single-use plastic wherever possible.
