Pledge to keep sub-post offices open as Mile End branch prepares to move

PUBLISHED: 14:25 05 August 2013 | UPDATED: 14:25 05 August 2013

A major revamp of post offices in east London means an end to the threat of any more branch closures.

The pledge emerged today as plans were announced for Mile End Post Office to be relocated to more modern premises with longer hours including Saturday afternoons.

“This investment makes a commitment to no more branch closure programmes,” said Post Office regional network manager Will Russell.

“We understand how important having a Post Office is in Mile End and are confident this will meet the needs of the community and secure services for the future.”

The branch is being relocated to a convenience store at Bleadon House, just 75 yards south from its current premises at 1b Burdett Road.

Opening hours are being extended by 20 hours a week with selected services during normal shop opening hours, Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm and Saturdays 7am to 5.30pm. But there is no date yet for the move.

The commitment not to close branches comes five years too late for sub-post offices at Whitechapel Road, Watney market, The Quarterdeck in Millwall and Devons Road and Heylyn Square in Bromley-by-Bow.
