Police are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist - a man believed to be 62 years old - died after a collision with a tipper lorry on the cycle superhighway in Mile End Road yesterday.

Officers and London Ambulance Service were called to CS2, at the junction with Bancroft Road, at about 4.40pm and the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

His identity is known to the police and next of kin have been informed but formal identification is still to be carried out.

The driver of the lorry stopped at the scene and was interviewed by officers under caution.

He has not been arrested.

The cyclist is the third to die on CS2.

A Met police spokesman said: “At this early stage it is believed the collision occurred as the lorry moved off from stationary traffic.

“The lorry was not turning at the time of the collision.”

Inquiries are being made by the Met’s road death investigation unit at Chadwell Heath and a post-mortem examination will take place.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it is asked to call the witness appeal line on 0208 597 4747.
