THOUSANDS of fake Bollywood’ DVDs and CDs worth �30,000 in street’ value have been seized in a crackdown on illegal sales in London’s East End.
The raids were carried out on suspect traders at Whitechapel Market by police with Tower Hamlets trading standards officers and British Phonographic Industry officials.
They searched a lock-up store during the operation last week where they uncovered the disks, all said to be illegal copies in breach of the Trade Marks Act and Video Recordings Act.
Peddlers of illegal copies of films are making regular appearances’ at Thames magistrates’ court because of the continuing raids.
“We prosecute illegal DVD sellers on a regular basis,” explained Tower Hamlets cabinet member Abdal Ullah.
“We always follow up leads which have brought us to countless pirate DVD factories in the past.
“Customers end up short-changed as they are paying for an inferior product and have no comeback when things go wrong.”
The authority has vowed to continue its war on the pirates and all those involved in selling counterfeit Bollywood and mainstream Hollywood films.
