An ordinary day on the beat took an unexpected turn for one police officer, when he was asked to help deliver a baby girl.

Pc Robert Morgan was dealing with a vehicle which had been stopped in Rick Roberts Way, Stratford, yesterday when a father driving his expectant wife to hospital pulled over.

The man said the baby was on his way and asked the Tower Hamlets safer transport officer for help.

PC Morgan telephoned for an ambulance, but minutes later was forced to deliver the baby before paramedics had arrived.

He was helped by colleague Pc Christine Goode and the mother’s sister.

The mother and the child, who was born at 1.23pm near a Mercedes Benz showroom, were taken to an east London hospital.

Pc Morgan, said: “We deal with all sorts of incidents, however I wasn’t expecting this today. The mother was not keen on my suggestion of calling the baby girl Mercedes!”
