Bethnal Green and Bow MP leads campaign on money transfer agencies

PUBLISHED: 12:39 16 July 2013

A campaign to protect agencies which allow people to send money to loved ones in deprived countries is being led by MP for Bethnal Green and Bow Rushanara Ali.

The shadow international development minister is heading a group of 46 Labour MPs putting pressure on banks and the government to protect the agencies, which they say play a vital role in delivering aid.

The campaign follows Barclays bank’s decision to withdraw accounts it holds for UK money transfer firms amid fears they may be used for criminal activity.

Ms Ali said: “The money-transfer industry - one that is prominent in east London - is very important for people who send money to their family and friends in places that are not easily accessible, often including remote areas.”

The MPs have now written to Barclays urging it to reconsider its decision.
