'Crisis grants' worth a total of £350,000 have been handed out to 1,700 of Tower Hamlets' most vulnerable residents since April, the council has said.

The grants can be applied for to help struggling people in the most difficult circumstances after responsibility for their delivery was passed from the government to local authorities in April.

One beneficiary, 36-year-old Jason Taiwo, explained the grant he received helped him find a home after three years living on the streets.

“It has been life changing,” he said. “I can spend time with my son in my rented studio flat. It’s easier to think about the future because I’m not worried about finding somewhere safe to sleep too.”

Mayor of Tower Hamlets Lutfur Rahman added: “The crisis grants provide support for our most vulnerable residents, and I am pleased that we could help Jason find somewhere to live.”
