David Cameron greets Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

DAVID Cameron met with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Downing Street today to discuss the strong links between their countries.

The meeting between the two premiers came shortly after Ms Hasina was greeted by Bethnal Green and Bow MP Rushanara Ali in the House of Commons.

Ms Ali - who became Britain’s first Bangladeshi MP last May - discussed a range of issues with the South Asian leader.

There are half a million people of Bangladeshi heritage in the UK, with the largest community in the East End.

Around a third of the population in Tower Hamlets are of Bangladeshi origin.

After her tour of London, Ms Hasina met with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

The pair discussed trade links, co-operation on counter-terrorism, health, education and climate change in Bangladesh.

Ms Hasina was also handed the Diversity Award by Commons speaker John Bercow yesterday evening.

She was praised for encouraging diversity in both the public and private sectors.
