A TRAIN crew manager has thrown his hat into the ring as the Green candidate for Tower Hamlets mayor.

Alan Duffell will contest the newly created post in the October election and said if elected he wants to improve Tower Hamlets’ green record.

He said his campaign slogan was “fighting for democracy” and he questioned the amount of power which would be given to one person with the new system of having a directly elected mayor for Tower Hamlets.

Mr Duffell, 25, who lives in Stepney said: “We will be working with other parties on a policy by policy basis.”

And he said he was not a big fan of cuts as a way of getting out of the recession but rather wanted to support the jobs of key workers.

“I would be making cuts only where cuts are necessary. If something is unnecessary, such as the council’s paper East End Life, we would cut that.”

Mr Duffell contested the Bow East seat for the Greens in this May’s council election.
