Protest over plans for German Oktober beer fest on Isle of Dogs

Plans for a German beer festival on the Isle of Dogs have led to a protest from a local councillor getting all frothed up at the thought of an ‘invasion’ by thousands of revellers.
The London Oktoberfest is advertising a four-day event in Millwall Park next month, complete with Lederhosen, sauerkraut and German sausages.
But Tower Hamlets council’s licensing committee is yet to decide whether to give the event the go-ahead—they don’t meet till next Tuesday.
A Tory Opposition councillor on the Isle of Dogs which includes Millwall Park has written to the committee to object.
“I absolutely oppose plans to put a pub in our park,” said a furious Gloria Thienel. “Parks are supposed to be green spaces for residents and families to enjoy—not venues for alcohol-fuelled parties.”
Around 3,500 revellers a day are expected to turn up. Objectors fear this would swamp the quiet neighbourhood.
“There is clearly huge potential for crime, disorder and nuisance,” Cllr Thienel added.
“It is impossible to hold an event on this scale without intruding on residents.
“So many revellers make a lot of noise while they party and also late at night when they leave.”
The park is next to schools such as George Green’s Comprehensive and residential areas like the Schooner Estate and Chapel House conservation area, objectors point out.
Parking is also an issue. Millwall Park is reached by the DLR at Island Gardens—but Cllr Thienel fears this would be overwhelmed.
The ‘party in the park’ from October 3 to 6, with a marquee big enough for 3,300 revellers, has already been promoted on London Oktoberfest’s website. There was no answer when we called the company for comment.
But a puzzled Town Hall said today that any application would have to be decided by the committee on Tuesday—before the beer fest went ahead.
