Whitechapel Market targeted in trading standards swoop

PUBLISHED: 16:53 06 August 2013 | UPDATED: 16:53 06 August 2013

Stolen phones and counterfeit goods were seized by police during a swoop on Whitechapel Market.

Hundreds of “unsafe and fake” mobile phone chargers and accessories were among the haul taken by police and trading standards officers.

The swoop was part of the Metropolitan Police Operation Big Wing, clamping down on theft.

Deputy Mayor of Tower Hamlets Cllr Ohid Ahmed said: “We all like a bargain but fake goods are both illegal and dangerous.”

After the items were seized, on July 25, they were sent for safety tests.

Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman added that the borough’s street markets are “justly famous”, but emphasised the importance of protecting consumers.
