Extra scrutiny is expected as residents go to the polls today for the postponed Blackwall and Cubitt Town ward by-election.
The vote was put back after the sudden death of Tower Hamlets First candidate Hifzur Rahman a day before of the May 22 local election.
Council officers have been going door-to-door making inquiries to prevent voter fraud, and the Electoral Commission will have officers at every polling station and at the count.
The result could influence the balance of power at the council between the Labour group and Mayor Lutfur Rahman’s Tower Hamlets First.
Polling stations are in Blackwall Way by the DLR station, in Prestons Road near the self-storage warehouse, in Jack Dash House near Lawn House Close and at Cubitt Town Infants School in Manchester Road.
