The annual Poppy Appeal in London’s East End by the Royal British Legion raised nearly £14,000 at Canary Wharf, it has been revealed this week.
Volunteers out collecting in Poplar and the Isle of Dogs on Poppy Day managed to raise £13,627 from donations from passers-by.
Local organiser Craig Aston said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the public’s generosity and the obvious appreciation so many have for the work our Armed Forces do.”
More was raised by the Royal Navy’s HMS President base at Wapping during Poppy Day on November 7, in addition to donations from East End businesses. The final amount throughout Tower Hamlets won’t be known until the summer.
The cash raised goes straight to the national Poppy Appeal, adding to the £1.7 million spent every week by the Legion supporting the needs of Armed Forces families.
