A primary school in Spitalfields delivered an early Christmas present to residents, shoppers and traders by bringing the tale of baby Jesus to the streets today.

Pupils from Christ Church Primary School in Brick Lane, took part in a living nativity procession featuring Mary, Joseph and a donkey borrowed from Spitalfields City Farm.

The fundraiser saw 180 children dressed as characters from the Bible story including the three wise men and the angel Gabriel.

The nativity was held to raise much-needed funds for the school, which is seeking to attract new pupils in the Tower Hamlets area.

A short carol service by the Allen & Overy choir and several Christmas readings took place at the end of the procession.

Two years ago parents, pupils and staff raised £80,000 for an adventure-style playground and now they are hoping to fund a new art room and musical instruments.
