Prince Andrew has officially opened the Barbican’s Fish Island Labs in East London as Britain’s first permanent centre for digital technology and artists exploring scientific frontiers.
The 8,000sq ft former Edwardian warehouse by the River Lea at Hackney Wick, in the shadow of the Olympic stadium, houses a diverse community of 50 emerging practitioners pushing creative boundaries.
“The rise of digital technology has led to boundaries blurring and worlds coming together,” Prince Andrew said. “This centre recognises that a new generation of innovators is emerging which cannot be compartmentalised in the usual way.”
Fish Island Labs is the UK’s first dedicated facility for innovators whose work spans technology and the arts, developed by the Barbican with The Trampery workspace designers.
It aims to develop cutting-edge work over the next 10 months, from sculpture, installations and physical performance to coding, film editing and digital art.
