Protesters block Tower Bridge causing traffic jam—in protest at traffic pollution

Protesters have brought traffic to a standstill on Tower Bridge in a protest over London air pollution.

Police are negotiating with members of the ‘Stop Killing Londoners’ group who say they are determined to remain with their sit-down demo in the middle of the road on the iconic cantilever bridge.
Their protest has caused gridlock at the Tower Hill one-way system affecting traffic as far back as Aldgate, Whitechapel and Wapping on the north side of the Thames as well as Bermondsey on the south side.
“We won’t budge until we get arrested,” protester Lydia Wolf, 19, told the East London Advertiser.
“But the City Police who have been negotiating with us say they don’t want to arrest anyone. They would rather we left—but we’re staying put.”

The campaigners turned up at 12.30pm and sat in the road, protesting that the Mayor of London’s proposed expansion of an ‘Ultra Low Emissions’ zone out to the North Circular and South Circular main routes “doesn’t go far enough” to tackle London’s air pollution.
The group also plans a ‘mock funeral’ on during this Wednesday evening’s rush-hour in The Strand.

Their last protest was at Marble Arch five days ago when one demonstrator was arrested.
