QUEEN Victoria joined a host of Tower Hamlets residents for a tour of Victoria Park in a horse drawn carriage to celebrate the completion of multi-million pound improvement plans put together with the help of residents.
A 500 page dossier of designs for the historic park was handed over to the
Heritage Lottery Fund in a bid for a slice of the �90 million Parks and People scheme - a �90 million project funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Councillor Abdal Ullah who is responsible for a green Tower Hamlets said: "Victoria Park is the crown jewel in the parks of the East End. It is our equivalent of West London's Hyde Park and Regents Park, and of major importance to local people.
The park which borders Tower Hamlets and Hackney is now home to the Lovebox weekend.
It opened in the 1840s, after Queen Victoria was sent a petition of 30,000 signatures.
It is hoped that Victoria Park will be revamped in time for London 2012 when it is used as part of the walking course for athletes, but it will provide a key cycle route to the Olympic Park for Londoners.
