Rare Medieval coins worth a royal mint go show at Tower of London

Rare coins going back to the Middle Ages are now on public show in a permanent exhibition at the Tower of London showing 500 years of the Royal Mint’s story.

Five pivotal points in the centuries of minting coinage at The Tower from 1279 to 1812 are highlighted—Isaac Newton’s efforts to rid London of counterfeiters when he was Warden of the Mint, Edward I’s harsh treatment of anyone who tampered with his coins, Elizabeth I’s restoration of the coinage after her father Henry VIII’s disastrous meddling and Charles II’s rejection of Commonwealth currency.

Exhibits also include a rare 13th century Edward I silver groat and other rare objects loaned by the Royal Mint Museum.
