Good news for local historians – the reading room in a grade II listed library has reopened.
Specialists employed by the council have restored the highly ornate decorative plaster ceiling at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives, in Bancroft Road, Mile End.
The reading room, which holds local historic collections, was shut in January after a part of the ceiling collapsed.
It is believed that it is the first time the ceiling has been restored in 50 years.
John Biggs, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said the library is a precious resource for the borough, and one which many hold dear.
“I am delighted therefore to see the reading room restored to its former glory, and am thankful to our highly skilled contractors for carrying out such a professional job,” said the Mayor.
“We look forward to welcoming the local community back to this wonderful place, and for Tower Hamlets residents to continue to enjoy it for many years to come.”
