The big crunch is about to begin with Tower Hamlets Council opening collection points for discarded Christmas trees for recycling.

The festive arboreal waste can be crunched into fertiliser. Free collections start Monday, from January 8 to 22, left out before 7am after being stripped of decorations to be picked up on scheduled collection days for garden waste.

They can also be taken to nine collection points or to the council’s recycling centre at Yabsley Street in Blackwall, next to the Poplar Dock Marina.

Collection points are at Globe Road, Roman Road and Wennington Road in Bethnal Green, St Marks Gate car-park in Victoria Park at Hackney Wick, Manchester Road and Westferry Road on the Isle of Dogs, Newell Street in Limehouse, Aberfeldy Street in Poplar and Christian Street in Shadwell.

Other household waste such as Christmas cards, paper wrapping, glass bottles, food wrapping, tin cans and foil can also join the recycling list.

Used batteries from toys and games can be recycled at supermarkets or recycling sites. Mixed recycling also includes rinsed plastic bottles including milk shampoo, bleach, juice and washing up liquid. Glass and Cans can also go into recycling after rinsing.

But broken glass, tableware or cookware cannot be recycled and have to be put into the household rubbish.

The council recycling scheme includes food waste and garden and bulk waste collections.
