FIRE crews rescued a man trapped when a blaze broke out in a top-floor flat in a tenement block in London's East End.

The man was overcome when smoke filled the fifth floor of a building at Corfield Street in Bethnal Green on Sunday afternoon.

Ambulance paramedics treated him for the effects of smoke, but he was not seriously hurt.

The alarm was raised by neighbours when the smoke billowed across the street from a grill at the top of the communal staircase. No other properties were affected.

The pictures were taken by East London Advertiser reader John Douce, a retired engineer living nearby.
