RESIDENTS were calling for the Town Hall to help put Poplar on the map last night following complaints it was a deprivation hotspot.

Neighbours living on the east side of Poplar handed in a petition to Tower Hamlets council demanding its support in "revolutionising" the area which includes the Teviot and Aberfeldy estates.

They were calling for more social housing, new amenities and green spaces as well as improvements to existing facilities including Poplar Baths and Chrisp Street Market.

And at last night's meeting Chrissy Townsend who leads the Teviot Action Group told the council chamber east Poplar was the "forgotten part of Britain".

She said: "We would like east Poplar to be put on the map. Just think what meets people when they come out of Blackwell Tunnel.

"There is a clear distinction between south and east Poplar."

Housing councillor Marc Francis told the chamber the council was "committed to the future of Poplar to make it a great place to live".

And a spokeswoman for Poplar HARCA which runs the majority of the estates in the area said today the housing association "fully supported" residents in their campaign to regenerate the area.
