Transcendental virtuoso Chandra Chakraborty performs a tribute in Bethnal Green on Saturday to “the last queen of Thumri music” on the first anniversary her death.
Chandra, who takes the stage at Rich Mix arts centre, is considered one of today’s top Indian classical vocalists in Europe.
Thumri promoter Ahmed Kaysher aims to build a network of transcendental music followers in the West to commemorate the late Girija Devi, a favourite of legendary Sitar maestro Ravi Shankar.
“Girija was the last queen of Thumri,” he said. “This concert has the hypnotic styles of Thumri that she developed and will be performed by the best of this genre today.
“This kind of Indian classical music rarely happens in the East End. So we hope to create a legacy with a network of classical music lovers.”
Chandra is accompanied on tabla by Gurdain Rayatt, on violin by Kamalbir Nandra and on harmonium by Siddhartha Kargupta.
Saturday’s concert at Rich Mix in Bethnal Green Road begins 7.30pm.
