A 62-year-old man planning a gruelling cycling challenge for charity has been given a good luck tea party at a care home in London’s East End and told to get on his bike.

Richard Burt—who took up cycling for the first time just four years ago when he was 58—hopes to break records in Simon Warren’s 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs challenge in just 12 days in August.

He is following Simon’s guide book as his inspiration to raise funds for Dementia UK charity, on behalf of his mum Peggy who has Alzheimer’s and lives with dementia.

Richard was joined by Simon on the visit to Stepney’s Hawthorn Green care home as part of National Bike Week, which ends on Sunday. He is being sponsored by Sanctuary Care Homes to raise £50,000 for Dementia UK.

The cycling pair certainly impressed one care home resident, 83-year-old Ron Ballard, once a keen cyclist himself.

“I loved Richard’s modern bike,” Ron said. “I cycled a lot in my day—I told them about my cycling days.”

But the well-wishers at the home were hoping Richard has plenty of good maps for his August challenge, as some of the climbs are well hidden and might take some doing—especially in his sixties.
