A PENSIONER has been killed after he was knocked down by a truck in Mile End Road.

The man, believed to be in his 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the collision at 11.20am this morning, Scotland Yard confirmed.

The man's body was still believed to be under the lorry at the junction of Mile End Road and Harford Street, opposite Queen Mary College, for a couple of hours later.

Tower Hamlets police closed the busy trunk road between Stepney Green Tube and Burdett Road after the fatality causing traffic chaos. Diversions via Ben Jonson Road and Commercial Road are in place and the lorry is now being taken away.

The identity of the dead man has not yet been released.
