Northern Irish midfielder impressed by ambition of the east Londoners and turned down League One teams to move to Brisbane Road

Leyton Orient’s new captain Robbie Weir admits he has moved to Brisbane Road to get the O’s promoted from League Two.

The 28-year-old was released by Burton Albion at the end of the 2015/16 campaign after helping them finish second in League One and go up to the Championship.

Weir had offers from teams in the division above the Orient, but was drawn to the east Londoners because of their ambition.

After helping Burton earn back-to-back promotions, the Northern Irish midfielder is hoping to do something similar at Brisbane Road.

“I had a few options, a couple up Scotland and a few League One teams, but it was what Orient wanted that made me join them,” said Weir.

“The club wants success and that is what I feel attracted me, the fact they want to get promoted. That is the bottom line, there is no way about it, I’ve been there and done it and it’s something I want to do again.”

Weir is one of a nine signings made by boss Andy Hessenthaler this summer with AFC Bournemouth loanee Harry Cornick the latest addition.

The ex-Burton midfielder believes the Orient squad is good enough to mount a significant challenge in League Two this season.

He stressed the importance of everybody pulling in the right direction, though, regardless of whether they are in the starting XI or not.

“I definitely think this team is good enough to go up and it is all about the squad, we have to stick together,” said Weir.

“Regardless of whether we lose a couple of games or whatever it may be in the season because it is a long old year and we have to stick together throughout.

“What I’ve seen of the squad so far, the players starting or not and ones coming off the bench, I think a positive season is ahead.

“August is a busy month and you never know what could happen, the starting XI for the first game might not be the same for the next match.

“Injuries or people being tired, whatever it may be so it is very important all the lads stick together and are right for whenever they are called upon.”

Orient continued their preparation for the new campaign on Tuesday night by winning 2-1 at local rivals Dagenham & Redbridge.

Hessenthaler’s men trailed early on, but Armand Gnanduillet equalised just before half time at Victoria Road.

Paul McCallum scored the winner on the stroke of full time – his second goal of pre-season after netting at Woking on July 19.

Weir added: “Some of the lads have already told me Paul scores goals and I have seen that the last couple of games. He scored at Dagenham and obviously last week at Woking and it’s very important for us.

“I’ve said before it is a team, we’re a squad and there are no individuals in here. It’s going to be a long season and all the lads need to stick together.

“If you’re not starting the first couple of games of the season, don’t think that’s it – people will get their chance to come on and shine throughout the campaign.”

The message from Orient’s new captain is clear and considering his success at Burton over the last two years, he certainly knows what he is talking about.
