RIFLEMAN Rory Jennings has given up the comforts of his home in East London to live rough for two weeks on the North Yorkshire moors.

He is being trained and tested with 90 of his Territorial Army mates from the 7th Battalion Rifles to gain promotion.

The 26-year-old from Stepney Green has been in the Territorials six years and has now set his gun-sights on getting his stripes.

He recently returned from operations in Afghanistan and was taking his turn as platoon commander during his promotion course (pictured), instructing his mates on an attack.

The Territorials left their full time jobs behind for two weeks and travelled to Wathgill Army Camp where they have taken part in a tough Junior Non-Commissioned Officer course to test their military skills as well as leadership and man-management techniques.

The training has been hotting up in the final week while they are put through their paces out in the field’ for two days with the winter weather approaching, ready for their final night-time assault exercise.

The 7th Battalion Rifles is part of the largest Infantry Regiment in the British Army, with one of its five Company bases in East London at West Ham, another in the West End where Rifleman Jennings is based.

The TA has around 31,000 soldiers in Britain and Gibraltar. Nearly 15,000 have served alongside the Regular Army in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003, including 700 currently serving there now.

It has recently stepped up its recruitment online:
