The 36-year-old discussed what is driving the O’s on during the final few weeks of the 2017/18 campaign

Ross Embleton revealed Leyton Orient have certain targets they are keen to reach before the end of the season despite little to play for now.

The O’s have six National League fixtures left after Monday’s clash at home to Maidenhead United was called off due to an unsafe area of the Brisbane Road pitch.

Orient cannot make it into the play-offs and relegation seems a distant memory now Justin Edinburgh’s team have reached the magic 50 points mark, but Embleton spoke about the motivation following this week’s postponement.

Although local rivals Dagenham & Redbridge have 58 points, O’s aim is to try and catch John Still’s side before the end of the campaign and a victory during Saturday’s home fixture with Barrow would help.

Embleton said: “We know it has not been the season everyone wanted to have, but at the same time we still need to keep striving to catch the teams above us.

“We want to try and go above Dagenham and the other sides ahead of us do have a gap over us right now, but we need to aspire to catch them.

“Obviously we want to stay as far away from the relegation zone as possible, but if we want to improve and develop and take this club in the direction we are hoping to go in next season, then we need to aspire for more than just getting further ahead of Barrow.”

Edinburgh’s team will go into the contest with the Bluebirds off the back of two wins and they were keen to make it three in a row on Monday.

A particular area of the Brisbane Road pitch was simply unplayable though, and despite kick-off being less than 90 minutes away, referee Adam Penwell was left with little choice but to call the fixture off after a pitch inspection.

Embleton added: “Recently we’ve really spoken and focused on trying to make sure we can have a strong finish, so there are building blocks in place for next season.

“Obviously we have still got a month left of this one, but it is about trying to build so we come back for next season with a good feeling and with positivity.

“If we can do that it should help us get the ball rolling again in a positive manner straight away, so this postponement is a little bit of a kick in the teeth because our last two results have been good and we wanted to try and build on it against Maidenhead.”
