THE Royal London Hospital's renal unit could see its caseload reduced as another centre for patients with kidney failure opens up in Newham tomorrow.
Barts and the London Trust which runs the Royal London's Hanbury Dialysis Unit is opening another centre at Newham University Hospital to save some patients the long trip to Whitechapel for their treatment.
The �2m centre will also pioneer an innovative "self-care centre", where patients and their carers will be taught to carry out dialysis themselves.
The new unit which will be run by a team of nursing staff, medics, dieticians and support staff will house 28 dialysis machines, giving treatment to 56 patients a day.
The Royal London's dialysis centre was the first custom-designed unit in the UK 40 years ago and has around 600 patients on its books.
