Royal London Hospital staff give young patients a taste of independence

The Royal London Hospital hosted an party for some of its younger patients offering them a chance to meet others who face similar challenges.

The annual event, held on Saturday October 15, was hosted at the hospital’s children’s play area and for the first time included youngsters from Newham and Waltham Forest.

The afternoon was an opportunity for the teenagers, aged 12 to 19, to enjoy an afternoon independent from their parents and to take part in activities they may not always have access to in their communities.

Prior to the event staff at the hospital drew up a ‘wish list’ of activities to ensure young patients enjoyed themselves to the fullest.

The teenagers enjoyed using virtual reality headsets, being pampered in a nail bar and a live performance from a magician in addition to many other activities at the Barts Health Adolescent Party.

Tara Shea, play team leader at The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, said: “It was fantastic to see our patients enjoy a taste of independence and get a confidence boost from having fun doing every day teenage activities that some may miss out on because of hospital appointments or treatments.

“It’s important that having a medical condition does not stop young people from following their dreams.

“I’m proud of their achievements, and grateful to our event volunteers and the hospital teams who helped to make the party such a success.”
