“Smart bins” are set to pop up around Tower Hamlets that will allow mobile phone users to communicate with the council about their rubbish problems.
In the coming months, 1,800 new bins are set to be installed that will have a Quick Response (QR) code or a Short Message Service (SMS) text number stamped on the side so residents with smart phones or mobiles can report waste disposal issues to Tower Hamlets Council.
The smart bins will join the 1,200 bins already dotted around the borough.
Cllr Shahed Ali, cabinet member for environment, said: “The new ways of communicating with the council, through the SMS messaging or QR codes, mean that any unexpected problems with the bins can be dealt with swiftly.”
