A GEORGIAN terrace that last had a facelift 130 years ago is getting a make over’ with new shop fronts in London’s East End.
Town Hall bosses are ploughing �500,000 into sprucing up the run-down terrace of 18th century houses and shops along Bethnal Green Road at the top end of Brick Lane.
The cash to tidy up’ the 19 properties comes from planning gain’ contributions from developers of the new Bishops Square, near Spitalfields Market half-a-mile away.
It means repairing roofs, facades and putting in new shop fronts in stages over three years from next January.
“The terrace has so much history behind it,” said Tower Hamlets council’s regeneration lead member Ohid Ahmed. “It’s amazing how this kind of investment can provide a boost for a whole area by encouraging other building owners to look after their properties.”
The terrace, which is in a conservation area, last had a major facelift in the mid-1880s in high Victorian’ style.
Much of the original 18th century fabric remains hidden at the rear, giving the terrace great historic and architectural interest.
