The O’s host fellow strugglers Chester tonight with just three points seperating the two clubs in the National League

Sam Sargeant has talked up the importance of Leyton Orient putting a run of results together after a difficult two-and-a-half months in the National League.

Since beating Guiseley 4-1 on September 2, the O’s have failed to go longer than one game unbeaten in the division.

Potentially turning points following draws at Aldershot Town, Barrow and Wrexham have failed to materalise.

But with 21st-placed Chester visiting Brisbane Road this evening, Orient will look to end their run of 12 games without a league win.

Sargeant said: “It is important to get on a good run and accumulate points and you need confidence to do that.

“We haven’t had that of late, so to get the point on Saturday against a strong Dover Athletic side should set us up nicely for the game with Chester.”

Last weekend’s match was Ross Embleton’s first in interim charge of the club and the 36-year-old impressed.

He had to deal with a big problem before kick-off with Charlie Grainger hurting his hip and being forced to miss out.

Sargeant wasn’t complaining though, after being handed his first opportunity of the season and he also didn’t let down his club.

The 20-year-old discussed the recent form of the team and offered his views on Embleton, who rejoined the O’s in July.

“Ross has been here since the start of the season and is a great coach. I can only speak really highly of Ross and so do all the other lads,” said Sargeant.

“We just wanted to come out and give him a good start. It was always going to be tough and we knew that before the game.

“We’ve been training well for weeks, but it hasn’t fallen for us and to get a point, and it very easily could have been three, is the platform we need to push on and get a nice run of results together now.”

After getting the late call-up to play, Sargeant had to be alert in the opening stages of the match.

A mistake by Joe Widdowson allowed James Alabi through on goal and most Orient fans feared the worst.

But O’s young custodian made himself big and blocked the effort from the Dover forward and it proved to be crucial.

Sargeant joked: “I didn’t expect my first save to come that early in the game, but I’m happy I dealt with it in a positive way.

“Obviously it was my first game and I wasn’t that nervous, but I just wanted to do well and it was in my head, so when the ball came through and the striker was running at me, I was just thinking ‘stop him scoring, stop him scoring’.

“It does change the game because if they score then our heads might drop and you don’t know what the score might be, so to make that save I’m happy, but it is not just about that save it was a team performance and everyone played their part.”

Another good all-round display against Chester this evening and hopefully Orient will be celebrating picking up three points again.
