Former AFC Wimbledon midfielder reflects on that wonder strike and the O’s bouncing back against Notts County
Sammy Moore was thrilled to score his first two goals for Leyton Orient on Saturday and help them get back to winning ways in League Two by beating Notts County 3-1 at Brisbane Road.
The 28-year-old opened the scoring after 16 minutes of play in east London, volleying past Magpies custodian Scott Loach after Bradley Pritchard had chipped the ball over the top for him.
Jon Stead equalised for County within a minute of half time, but Jay Simpson tapped home with 10 minutes remaining before Moore fired home his second.
The former AFC Wimbledon man rifled a shot into the top corner from 30-yards-out and thoroughly enjoyed scoring in the Football League for the first time since March 25 2014.
Moore said: “I didn’t think I was offside for the first. I knew if I timed my run I would be in and it is a great ball from ‘Pritch’ and I managed to finish it off.
“For the second the boys gave me a bit of stick to be fair, saying I should have passed it and that they would give me a bollocking because I didn’t, but it has gone in and is one of the best goals I have ever scored so I am delighted.
“I have got two in one game, I don’t think I have ever done that before so I am delighted and the boys are as well that we got three points, that was the main thing and that we bounced back from Tuesday night’s defeat against Carlisle United.”
The disappointing loss at Brisbane Road to the Cumbrians ended a frustrating September for Orient and head coach Ian Hendon.
But Moore and co ensured the O’s got back to winning ways with a battling display against Notts County on Saturday.
He added: “We have had to dig deep, but so have a lot of teams this year and we haven’t had the rub of the green recently.
“It is nice to get that this time and see the result go our way. It is an important three points, we wanted to bounce back from Tuesday and we did that.
“Notts County will be up there this year, they have a good squad and some experienced pros. They are street wise, they know what this league is about.
“We knew they would be a good side and up for a test and they gave us that at times, but I thought the boys dug in really well.”
Orient certainly did that and showed their mettle by defeating a team that included the likes of former England international Alan Smith as well as Stead and Loach. That sorry September for the O’s has left the memory now.
