A SERIAL rapist has finally been jailed today (Tuesday) for a total of 12 years after being arrested by detectives for three vicious attacks 17 years ago.

Unemployed Wayne Liddy (pictured) raped two women and indecently assaulted another in East London in 1992 and 1993.

His first victim in October, 1992, was a 35-year-old returning home to Forest Gate after a night out who was dragged into a garage where she was raped before being robbed of cash.

His next victim was a 22-year-old a month later who had got off a train at Manor Park station who he forced to undress at Wanstead Flats and made to perform a sex act on him.

His third victim the following March, 1993, was a 27-year-old in an underground car park in Kirkdale Road, Leytonstone, who he dragged off to a secluded area and raped.

14 YEARS

It was another 14 years when he was arrested for minor criminal damage in 2007 in Northern Ireland where he was living that his DNA was found to match one of the rapes from 1992 on the National DNA database.

Liddy, now aged 44, was found guilty at Woolwich crown court today of raping the 35-year-old in Forest Gate on October 17, 1992, for which he got four-and-a-half years, indecently assaulting the 22-year-old at Wanstead Flats on November 19 that year, given three years, and raping the 27-year-old in Leytonstone on March 21, 1993, given four-and-half-years, all sentences running consecutively.

ALARMING

Det Sgt Annette Maslin, who led the investigation, said: “The level of planning and preparation Liddy went to before committing these brutal attacks was disturbing.

“He used an alarming level of violence when he raped these women, wearing a balaclava and terrifying them throughout.”

The Met’s cold case’ investigations team has secured 100 convictions against violent sex offenders since it was set up in 2002—men who believed their crimes had gone undetected.

It has also identified DNA profiles of 102 unknown rapists which are on the national database and will lead to their eventual arrest should they ever come to police notice.
