Shadwell dementia campaigner raises awareness at East End school

A campaigner for people suffering from brain disease has continued his mission by raising awareness of Dementia among secondary school students.

Emdad Rahman, of Cannon Street Road, Shadwell, visited year eight students at the London Enterprise Academy, on Thursday, to teach them about dementia and the effect the brain disease has on people’s lives.

Students from the academy, based in Commercial Road, Whitechapel, were given a lecture during their lunch hour after which Emdad delivered an information session and encouraged the participants to commit to a dementia friendly action.

The school’s headteacher, Ashid Ali, said: “At London Enterprise Academy we take our social responsibilities very seriously and our staff are committed to ensuring that our pupils, not only gain an excellent education, but develop to become role models who are committed to supporting those in the community who need it most.

“The pupils learnt a valuable lesson today and I can already see the participants wearing their dementia friends badges with great pride.”

Dementia friends is a social action movement from the Alzheimers Society which is committed to training 4 million dementia friends by 2020.

Earlier this year Emdad was hailed as a dementia friends champion after he reached the personal milestone of training 2,000 Dementia Friends.

The number of people with dementia in the UK is forecast to increase to more than one million by 2025.
