THOUSANDS of commuters in East London were hit this-morning by a faulty signal on the Underground which halted trains on the Central Line.

Services had to be suspended between Leytonstone and Liverpool Street because of the failure at Stratford.

It added to the misery caused by the snow, with delays on the Metropolitan Line due to severe overnight conditions.

De-icing trains have been running across the Tube network as well as the DLR and London Overground.

On the roads, Transport for London has been operating its fleet of 38 gritters to keep main routes and pavements clear.

But some bus routes have had to be diverted or cut short, mainly in outlying suburban areas.
