Old folk at a care home in London’s East End are getting a taste of the old Lyon’s Corner House on ‘Silver Sunday’ next month.

The residents and staff at Stepney Green’s Hawthorne Green home are joining communities up and down the country staging events to help combat loneliness and reduce isolation.

The home in Redman’s Road, off Mile End Road, has been making orchid-themed decorations and bunting.

It is having a 1920s ‘Lyons’ tea dance on Silver Sunday, October 2, at 2pm, with live music and a Charleston performer, just like the old days of the multi-storey Lyons Corner House restaurants once popular in London up till the 1970s.

Thomas Gamble, who turns 86 today, said: “I’m looking forward to a good old ‘knees up’ and learning some new dance moves.”

Staff at the home are even dressing as traditional ‘nippie’ waitresses who served in the old Corner House restaurants.
