Leyton Orient forward Jay Simpson was thrilled to get back in the goals at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday and help new boss Kevin Nolan start with a win.

The 27-year-old opened the scoring at Adams Park in the 64th minute and then passed to Calaum Jahraldo-Martin late on as the Hull City loanee sealed the 2-0 success.

It took Simpson’s tally for the League Two campaign to 21 and he marked it in style by doing Nolan’s famous chicken dance.

“I had two celebrations but I didn’t know which one I was going to go for so I kind of did both,” said Simpson.

“It was just a bit of fun with the new gaffer. It looked like he enjoyed it, but I guess he is just delighted with the result.

“The other one was a bit of banter with the president and Hessy, but it is all in good fun.

“I had a bad week so I was very pleased to get back on the scoresheet and to get an assist as well - I was delighted and we have won 2-0 so it is a great result.”

Simpson missed two penalties against Exeter City on January 16 in what would prove to be Ian Hendon’s last game in charge of the O’s.

It was a shocking defensive performance at Brisbane Road, but seven days later and Nolan’s men looked excellent at the back.

They had spent a lot of time working with him on their shape on Thursday and Friday and it clearly paid off at Adams Park.

Simpson added: “For a forward it is not the best and most enjoyable training work you do – defending, but it is important that we do it.

“Before the game Kevin thanked us for our efforts because what went on at the club, nobody really knew what was happening.

“After getting him in, he thanked us for the work and concentration we put into the training sessions. Just before the match he said go out there, work hard, speak to each other and enjoy it.”

Orient players certainly did that, especially in the second half when they attacked with real purpose from the off.

While the 805 away supporters at Adams Park enjoyed themselves, Simpson did have a message for his old manager.

He added: “It was obviously disappointing that he lost his job, I got on really well with Ian, but we were a victim of our own success.

“We started the season in fine form, winning our first five games and after that we didn’t reach the heights of earlier in the campaign so it was disappointing to see him lose his job. I wish him all the best because I enjoyed working for him.”
