SQUATTERS who have run a social centre in an abandoned Whitechapel school for the past five years were evicted last week.

Members of the Rampart collective who have been using the abandoned building as a centre for political activism, a free school and cultural and artistic events since 2004 said that police and bailiffs arrived at the centre in Rampart Street around 5.30am on Thursday morning.

Three people and a dog were inside the building, which used to be an Islamic girls' school, when officers tried to break down the door.

There have been several failed eviction attempts on the social centre since it was set up in 2004 and police raided the building in April following the G20 protests, detaining everyone inside. Two arrests were made but no further action was taken.
