Developers have been given the green light to turn a derelict strip of land along a railway line into almost 100 social housing flats.
Planning permission has been granted for 93 flats in Mantus Road, Bethnal Green, in a project overseen by housing association Tower Hamlets Community Housing.
The design for the flats, on a 300m strip along the railway line, was developed by building consultancy Ingleton Wood LLP.
Architect Stuart Nogett said: “This was a challenging project for the team as we had to work hard to create a scheme which fits both the changing landscape of London, enhances the local environment and which is sympathetic to the listed viaduct at the same time.”
Planners say the new flats will all be used for social housing.
Tower Hamlets Community Housing’s Deborah Crow added: “Ingleton Wood have designed one of the most dynamic residential designs that THCH has commissioned, but which has taken into consideration fully the needs of its future residents and the cost required to maintain it.”
