TOWER Hamlets council's newest bride-to-be has lashed out at the Town Hall over the costs of weddings in the borough.

Lib Dem group leader Stephanie Eaton, who this week shocked the East End's political establishment with her engagement to Labour party chairman David Edgar, has already found a cause for her new status.

Seemingly full steam ahead with her wedding plans, she has discovered that there is a £6.50 discrepancy between the cost of a civil marriage ceremony and a same sex civil partnership.

Weekday marriages at council-approved premises cost £298.50 compared to £305 for gay and lesbian couples. The charges are £100 higher for Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Crusading Cllr Eaton said: "I am concerned that this discriminates against same sex couples entering into a civil partnership.

"Although the monetary difference is not great, I would be much happier if the fees were the same, and I will be pressing the Council to ensure that this discrepancy is eliminated."

The politician has yet to reveal where and when her own nuptials will be held.
