The right-back scored a superb goal against his old club on Saturday during the 2-2 draw at the Breyer Group Stadium

Southend United manager Chris Powell was pleased to see Jason Demetriou impress against his old club Leyton Orient on Saturday.

The 30-year-old scored the opening goal of the friendly in E10 with a stunning strike from 25-yards.

Demetriou didn’t celebrate, however, and in turn received warm applause from the O’s crowd who haven’t forgotten the wide-man.

He started his career at Orient when current director of football Martin Ling was manager of the first-team.

After forcing his way into the O’s side, the Cypriot international made over a 150 league appearances for the east Londoners between 2006 and 2010.

Demetriou left in order to boost his chances of playing for Cyprus and it proved a wise decision.

Three years ago he returned to England to sign for Walsall in League One and more recently has been part of the Blues squad since the summer of 2016.

But Demetriou’s fine opener wasn’t enough to see Southend triumph with Macauley Bonne cancelling out his effort with a second-half penalty after James Alabi had been fouled by Harry Lennon.

Tom Hopper did put the Blues in front again and Orient’s former academy graduate was substituted soon after and earned warm applause from the O’s faithful.

Southend couldn’t hold on for a 2-1 win though, as Alabi equalised from outside the area to ensure it end all square.

Powell said: “There were some good elements to our play and some things to like, but some small details we have to eradicate coming up to this weekend.

“I thought the two goals we conceded, it was a soft penalty to be honest, but the second was poor and has come out of absolutely nothing.

“Those sort of things we can’t have in a 46-game season, but we created a bit more and we looked a threat at times and it was just our final ball, pass or cross which maybe let us down.

“It was a great first goal - JD coming back to his old haunt – so that was good and he was great. He played 90 against Leeds United, so that’s why we took him off early.”
