Dear Editor,
SHOP staff are working hard to make Christmas shopping as stress-free as possible.
But a recent survey showed that every minute of the working day one of them is verbally abused, threatened with violence or even physically attacked.
Incidents are more frequent in the run-up to Christmas as stores are busy, with customers stressed and more likely to take out their frustration on staff.
But verbal abuse cuts deep. Many will go home after a shift feeling upset about an unpleasant incident at work and worried it will happen again.
That is why we at Usdaw, the shopworkers' union, are running a 'Respect for Shopworkers' campaign asking shoppers to keep their 'cool' at Christmas.
With the season's greetings
John Hannett, General Secretary
Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers
