This spectacular picture provides a glimpse of the future as Crossrail workers pose in one of the world’s largest man-made caverns.
The other-worldly space, at Stepney Green, measures 164 ft (50m) long, 44ft (13.4m) wide and 54ft (16.6m) high at its largest point.
The team of 160 workers work 24 hours per day and seven days per week on the tunnel, and are lowered down to the site in a cage lift.
Crossrail, which will run from Berkshire to Essex, through the East End, is due to be completed in 2018. Services from Liverpool Street to Shenfield are set to start running in May 2015.
