Spitalfields design trio’s energy saving lightbulb is blossoming

THE future’s bright, the future’s … The Plumen That’s the verdict of Spitalfields-based design company, Hulger, who have come up with the world’s first designer low energy light bulb.

The bulb, which took three years to design, is an ecological product with style. The company, based in Elder Street, boasts the bulb lasts eight times longer than a standard incandescent bulb and save 80 per cent on energy bills.

It’s creators claim with its intriguing design, which changes shape according to the view, it could turn a normal light bulb into the talking point of any room.

Hulger co-founder and creative director Nicolas Roope said: “It’s strange that the bulb, an object so synonymous with ideas, is almost entirely absent of imagination.”

But due to the hard work and long hours put in by the design team of Mr Roope, along with colleagues Michael-George Hemus and Sam Wilkinson, this is set to change.

Currently selling at 20, the bulb’s creators admit it seems expensive but say in the long term, with cheaper energy bills, it could be money well spent.

But the price doesn’t seem to be putting people off. A batch of 8,000 bulbs due for release on February 25 is expected to sell out immediately.
