Five “secret” gardens tucked away behind the historic terraces in Spitalfields are opening to the public for just six hours on June 10.
The gardens tucked behind historic weaver terraced houses and cottages, part of National Gardens Scheme, this year include the courtyard behind the offices of the of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, the last Georgian building in Spital Square behind Commercial Street.
“This hidden garden is surrounded by historic walls and tall, modern buildings,” the society’s gardener Julie Charlesworth explains. “It can be challenging for gardening.
“But it’s amazing what will grow—native woodland plants, herbs and other shade-loving species such as hydrangeas, hostas and Japanese ferns.”
The open day is part of the National Gardens Scheme began in 1927, run by the Queen’s Nursing Institute. Funds for nursing and caring charities are raised by charging visitors £12 entrance one day a year to see the five gardens of Spitalfields, open 10am to 4pm on Saturday, June 10.
