More playing fields are being saved through Sport England’s role as statutory consulting body on planning applications, new figures this week reveal.
Applications affecting 119 open spaces in London alone during 2009-10 resulted in improved or safeguarded sports provision, 71 more than in the previous year. Only 10 development applications left things worse.
A new law came into force in 2009 which gave Sport England more power to protect playing fields. Landowners, including local authorities, now have to consult on any proposed development that would encroach on playing fields.
