Secondary school pupils were pitted against children from neighbouring boroughs for the first part of the Schools Indoor Rowing Challenge.
Year 8 to 13 students from Stepney Green Secondary School, in Ben Johnson Road, Stepney, participated in individual and relay races at Chobham Academy, in Newham, on Tuesday.
The rowing challenge was organised by London Youth Rowing (LYR), a non-profit charity, and is split into four competitions taking place in north, south, east and west London.
LYR manage more than 85 indoor rowing clubs in secondary schools across the capital as part of the Sport England and the National Lottery funded ‘Satellite Hubs and Clubs’ initiative.
Andrew Liney, senior manager satellite clubs at Sport England, said the programme helps introduce students to a sport that many young people are unfamiliar with.
“The Satellite Hubs and Clubs Programme reaches out to young people across London who might think that rowing isn’t for them,” said Andrew.
“The Schools Indoor Rowing Challenge is a great opportunity for young people who have been introduced to rowing to take part in some friendly challenges and competition and encourage them to keep rowing in the future.”
